Top 10 NES games you can't forget

Introduction:

Before there was any talk of 128-bit or 3D acceleration, there was the NES.  Everyone has their favorites, but the list below is the absolute essentials that we can not ever forget about.  Simply put: They provided the foundation for gamers everywhere.

#10:

TMNT II: The Arcade Game
tmnt2.gifEveryone loved this game!  Ported straight from the arcade world this title rocked the socks off Nintendo owners everywhere.  All the bosses, including Be-Bop and Rock Steady, were there to help multi-hologram Shredder keep you from finishing this game.   It was one of the best multiplayer experiences on the Nintendo.

#9:

Shadowgate
shadowgate.pngCreeepy!  This game made full use of absolutely NO animation.  You had your notepad/inventory on the right and your menu on the bottom leaving you with static images of characters and rooms in the final quarter of the screen.  However, the story was superb and unique.  Hours of pain as you had to remember to keep that torch lit or you would stumble and fall to your death.  Similar in style to DejaVu and Uninvited but stepped it up big time in the puzzle solving realm.

#8:

Mega Man 2
megaman2.pngThis had the best boss battles by far of any Mega Man game.  Dr. Wily’s new creations vs. Dr. Light’s lone blue little warrior never looked, sounded or felt the same before or since.  The only regret was leaving that evil doer alive to create five more sequel worth’s of robots.

#7:

Maniac Mansion
maniac_mansion.gifEven though the NES version was heavily censored when it was initially ported over, they somehow forgot to remove the ability to microwave a hamster to death.  Few Nintendo games gave the eerie/creepy feeling that this classic was able to dish out.

#6:

Little League Baseball: Championship Series
littleleague.gifThe most competitive multiplayer Nintendo game created.  Little kids from teams all over the world, fought for the top honors in the tournament.  There was nothing like taking Team New York and beating your friend who decided that Team China would be a good match.  The best part of hitting home runs against your friends was the way the game decided to rub it in their face with crying kids on screen.

#5:

Double Dragon 2: The Revenge
doubledragon2.jpgBeating this game is probably the proudest accomplishments of my life.  Facing the ghostly apparition of yourself would freak anyone out.  Hours upon hours were spent trying to play this game in front of as many people as possible since the top notch combat made you feel like a man.

#4:

River City Ransom
rivercityrandsom.pngThe Music.  The Violence.  This is the ultimate in square people combat games.  Take your pick of a tire iron or the tire itself and chuck it at the hordes of enemies that came your way.  This game gave me the satisfaction of taking a bat to someone’s head long before Quentin Tarantino ever thought of it.

#3:

Super Mario Bros. 3
supermario3.gifSMB 3 improved on the classic experience in almost every way.  It had cleaner graphics and 4 times as many power-ups, including the ability to fly!  Finding secrets coin stashes has never been more fun.  Plus it had the best marketing plan ever!  The Wizard anyone?

#2:

Battletoads
battletoads.gifWhat Fun!  Though few people rarely ended up making it past the 2nd level because everyone felt the need to knock your partner off his rope, it was just a blast.  One of the first games I can remember that seemed to fast.  Fast paced bike racing and fast combo attacks highlighted the state of the art cartoon graphics.

#1:

Final Fantasy
finalfantasy.pngLegendary.  Epic.  How else can I describe the game that serves as the basis for all that I hold holy in gaming today?  Fitting that kind of story and longevity on a cartridge was never heard of up until then.  I’ve followed no other series in any form of media for as long as I have with the Final Fantasy series, and for that it deserves the number one position on this list.

How is Contra not on this list?

That first level in Contra, the jungle level. You could go in the water and everything. I thought that was the best video games could get at the time.

#4 saved it

I was ready to scoff at you Ben, then I saw River City Ransom included. After loading us up with a decent volume of Commodore and Atari titles my parents were loathe to invest in the NES. "You've got 2 games (Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt of course) what more do you want?" was the refrain My inability as a 9 year old to beat SMB was their rationale. Then one fateful birthday River City Ransom came along and it was gamer ecstasy, especially after I got a Game genie. Points also for Double Dragon 2 and TMNT II. I would have picked Super Dodgeball over Little League baseball: CS though.

Super Dodgeball

I never got into Super Dodgeball, I think because I never had a second person to really pick up the controller in the old days...my brother was off putting models together...

I understand

I played alone too, but for some reason dug it. Models, hahahahahaha, it's funny because it's true.
