Top 10 Shots from the Avatar Trailer

Introduction:

We are all waiting for it.  Whether it be for the story or for the promise of a new age in movie making technology; we all have our reasons.  With the release of the theatrical trailer last week, Avatar is as poised as ever not only to break new ground, but to raise the hype to a level never before seen.  In an effort to be a part of the problem, rather than the solution, we present to you the top ten best moments in the Avatar theatrical trailer:

10) Jake's Transmission

Avatar Sam Worthington

Why:  This tells us, the audience, that Sam Worthington's character, Jake, has connections presumably off-planet.  Leave it to Cameron not to leave out some story in favor of character development.  The result hopefully being, that we will care more about Jake.

9) Recruitment

Avatar Recruitment

Why:  This gears more towards story as well; but we welcome this and will take it as Cameron taking his time to develop the story in the beginning, rather than rushing off into the new world.

8) Avatar Training (Montage anyone?)

Avatar Gunship

Why:  I can appreciate a good training sequence, and this lets us know that there is some transitional period that Jake needs to get accustomed to with his new Avatar.  Anything to make the story more believable.

7) Budget Touches

Avatar Body Armor

Why:  Did Cameron really need to emphasize the word "legs" with a point of the robotic body armor?  No of course not, but if he has the money and the rest of the movie doesn't suffer because of it...then so be it!

6) Na'vi Animations

Avatar Navi Zoe

Why:  While still not motion-realistic, the few scenes including this one that show the animated character's mouth movements make for a promising start.  Subtle mouth gestures and eyebrow movements help escape the CGI feel of overexaggerated animations.

5) Invasion Scene

Avatar Invasion

Why:  Just by the flow of the trailer we all know there is a big invasion scene that is pretty much inevitable.  Both of these shots are there to let us know that it will be on an absolutely massive scale.

4) Cavalry Charge

Avatar Calvary Charge

Why:  CHARGE! Seriously...a cavalry charge in a futuristic sci-fi movie?  Who in their right mind isn't excited by that?  In addition it lets us know that there is a ground battle occuring in addition to the aerial battle.

3) "Artsy" Factor

Avatar Navi Zoe

Why:  Shots like this ensure us that Cameron will not be all guns out the whole time.  It helps convince us that he will take his time with his scenes and ensure that the story holds intact and we continue to care about the characters.  We've been a fan since this first appeared in the teaser.

2) Aerial "Dragon" Chomp

Avatar Dragon

Why:  Even though this shot appeared in the teaser trailer, it is good enough to make the cut in the theatrical trailer.  It gives us the hope that Cameron hasn't lost his edge for next-gen action.

1) Release Date

Avatar December 18th

Why:  It serves as a big bold reminder that all the hard work...the ten years of researching this 3-D technology...the fifteen plus years he held on to the script waiting for technology to catch up to his vision...It reminds us that all of that finally...at last...is only weeks away.

Comments:

James Cameron is a genius

I am so happy that James Cameron is finally back behind the camera. It's been way too long, but Avatar will definitely make it well worth the wait. I mean, this guy gave us The Terminator, T2, Aliens, True Lies, The Abyss, and Titanic. Say what you will about Titanic and it being a love story, it's still a great movie. Long live Jim!
