The Future of our Servers: Part 2 [New Hardware]
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:48:19 pm »
Now that you all know how the server is going to be laid out, we thought we would give you a look into the current and new hardware that will be running this beast of a world configuration.

Rawcritics is currently a three server operation:
One server is a dedicated web servers that host all web properties and development sites.
The Build Server is a virtual 4 gig rig.
The PvP server is a dedicated 6 gig setup.

So where are we at?
As you guys have been informed, it is our intention to buy a brand new server as soon as the funds are raised.  Thus far an estimated $520 has been earned in ad revenue, and $240 in donations have come in.  The estimated total is in the mid $700 range.

The new server that Spack and I have been pricing is going to run us about $850.  As you can see - we are almost there!  Another $100 to $150 in ad revenue or donations and it is as good as ours!

So what will this new server do for us?
This quad core 32gig beast will be the hub machine our new combined/expanded minecraft universe will reside on.  Whether we incorporate the current build server in through a cluster setup or a modified multiverse, is still to be determined.  However, we are looking at a soft cap of around 250 to 300 people based on initial tests.

So what about the PvP server?
Our dedicated PvP server will no longer be running Minecraft.  Spackle has been wanting to legitimately expand out into other games as well, and this server will be dedicated for non-minecraft games/projects [Terraria/TF2/BF3/Etc...].

We can't wait. Thank you to those that have donated! It is because of you guys that we as close as we are.

What? You cannot have your mind un-officially blown. I'm 99% sure that is against the rules.

In a nutshell, we got stuff to have a better server, the build server is a computer run out of something, for instance Windows 7, and they run the survival server on it's own computer. The build server, which also runs the website/forums/wiki will become a forum/wiki/website server only, the survival computer will run battlefield 3 (i hope) server, we are getting a new server, which will run, build server, survival server, a nether world, a skyland(aether no custom mobs less tyr is that awesome to make that happen), his dungeons, and a world to choose build or survival world. One ip now, not two, one unified currency if we use multiverse, a shit ton of work for staff with finding the right plugins, the right permission nodes(which i can help with if need be), and overall a lot more awesome stuff to come. Can't wait. :)

Bad news guys...

I did some research on the wiki and found that this isn't going to work :(

Really though, congratz admins (and the rest of staff and community here!)  on the milestone you're reaching.

How about less, but faster cores?
